Routine Dental Care

Smiling Woman Portrait

Good long-term dental health is not simply about treating problems when they arise. Regular professional cleaning, personalised oral hygiene advice and appropriate monitoring can help prevent problems from developing or becoming more difficult to manage.

I work with dental hygienist or therapists as part of your ongoing care. The aim is to maintain the health of your teeth and gums and, where you have had previous restorative treatment, to help protect the results for as long as possible.

In addition, I work alongside a network of specialist dentists, and dentists with extended skills who I refer along to for discrete items of treatment where appropriate.

I provide routine dental care for patients in Liverpool and Merseyside.

Routine dental care is the foundation for maintaining healthy teeth and gums and supporting the longevity of any treatment you may have.

I provide routine examinations, preventive care and straightforward restorative treatment for patients in Liverpool and Merseyside. For patients undergoing more involved treatment, routine care also provides an opportunity to monitor the health of your teeth and gums and maintain the results over time.

What does routine dental care include?

Routine care is tailored to your individual needs and may include:

  • Dental examinations and oral health assessments

  • Preventive advice and monitoring

  • Hygiene and periodontal care

  • Routine fillings

  • Management of dental pain and other common dental problems

  • Monitoring existing restorations

  • Maintenance following more extensive restorative treatment

The aim is not simply to treat problems when they arise, but to identify potential issues early and help you maintain your oral health over the long term.

When might another approach be better?

Not every treatment needs to be carried out by me.

If a particular problem would benefit from the expertise or experience of a colleague, I will discuss this with you and arrange an appropriate referral.

For example, I may refer you to a colleague for root canal treatment or an extraction where the case is more complex and I feel you are likely to achieve a better outcome or benefit from that colleague's particular expertise.

In addition, I provide routine care alongside dental hygienist and therapist colleagues who I trust to provide straightforward care. Utilising others skills alongside mine means I can see you more efficiently for more complex work.  I see this as an important part of providing good care.

My aim is to make sure you receive the right treatment from the right clinician, rather than trying to provide every aspect of your care myself.

How I approach routine care

I take the same approach to routine care as I do to more involved treatment: first understand what is happening, then decide what, if anything, needs to be done.

Your examination will consider the condition of your teeth and gums, any existing restorations, your bite and any concerns you may have. Where treatment is needed, I will explain the options and help you understand what is appropriate, including whether treatment is necessary immediately or whether monitoring may be the better approach.

For patients who are having more comprehensive restorative treatment, routine care can also form part of the wider plan, helping to maintain the health of your natural teeth and supporting the longevity of your restorations.

What does treatment involve?

The treatment you need will depend on your individual circumstances. Some appointments may simply involve an examination and discussion of your oral health. Others may involve preventive treatment, hygiene care or straightforward restorative treatment.

If you need treatment that falls outside the care I provide, I will explain why I think a referral would be appropriate and discuss the next steps with you.

Sedation

If you are anxious about dental treatment or would feel more comfortable with sedation, I can arrange sedation alongside your treatment on request.

We can discuss whether sedation is appropriate for you and what options are available when planning your care.

Fees

Fees for routine and other treatments are set by the individual dental practices where I provide care. The fee for your treatment will therefore depend on the practice where your appointment takes place and the treatment you require.

I will explain the relevant fees before proceeding with planned treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide routine dental care as well as more complex treatment? Yes. Although much of my work involves more involved restorative treatment and comprehensive smile rehabilitation, I also provide routine dental care and ongoing maintenance for patients who need it.
What happens if I need treatment you don't provide? I will discuss this with you and, where appropriate, refer you to a colleague whose expertise is better suited to your particular needs. This may include more complex root canal treatment or extractions, for example.
Can I have sedation for my treatment? Sedation can be arranged alongside treatment on request. We can discuss your concerns and whether sedation would be appropriate when planning your care.
How often should I have a dental examination? The appropriate recall interval depends on your individual oral health, risk factors and treatment needs. I will recommend an interval based on your circumstances rather than applying the same schedule to everyone.
Can I continue seeing my own dentist? If you are referred to me for a particular aspect of your treatment, shared care can often be arranged. I am happy to work alongside your existing dentist where this is appropriate.
