About dr sefa ahiaku

I am a British-born Ghanaian dentist and have called Liverpool home for the past 15 years. I have deep roots in Merseyside, having spent much of my adult life here, although I also lived in North Wales and on the South Coast of England before moving to Liverpool.

I grew up in a family where medicine and caring for others were a big part of everyday life. Both of my parents and my brother are medical doctors in the NHS, so from an early age I was surrounded by conversations about people, health and the responsibility that comes with caring for others.

Growing up amongst people from different backgrounds has also shaped the way I communicate. Dentistry is, after all, about far more than teeth. Every patient brings their own experiences, concerns and expectations, and I believe taking the time to understand these is an important part of providing good care.

Our experiences shape the way we see ourselves, our health and the decisions we make. For me, understanding that story is an important part of understanding the person sitting in front of me. I want to know what has brought you to this point, what you would like to change, and perhaps just as importantly, what you want to preserve.

My aim is to help you move forward with a treatment plan that is thoughtful, personalised and appropriate for you — and with confidence in the decisions you are making.

My Journey in Dentistry

I graduated from the University of Liverpool with Honours in 2013 and spent the following years working across primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Early in my career, I had intended to remain in hospital dentistry and pursue a career in restorative care. However, my experience in general practice changed my perspective. I came to value the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients and to provide care that could make a difference not just at a single appointment, but over many years.

This led me to undertake a Master's in Clinical Dentistry at King's College London, completing my MClinDent with Distinction in 2023. My postgraduate training gave me a deeper understanding of complex restorative care and strengthened my ability to plan and deliver comprehensive treatment in general practice.

I have continued to develop my skills across dentistry because I believe comprehensive care requires more than expertise in one area. Understanding how different aspects of dentistry interact allows me to consider the bigger picture — your teeth, your smile, your bite, your oral health and, ultimately, what you want your dentistry to achieve.

For me, that is what makes treatment truly personalised.

Beyond Dentistry

Outside of dentistry, I'm happiest surrounded by good food, music and friends. Liverpool has given me a wonderful community, and I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and church community whenever I can. Music has always been an important part of my life too, and on a good week you might even find me at the piano.
